Lennon

After last night, the last person I wanted to see was Ryder. I couldn’t avoid him though, we were literally stuck working with each other. It was too late into the project to switch partners and I didn’t want to cause any issues in class with other people either.

Him coming up to me only to admit what I’d already known was even harder for me. I could tell he felt some kind of guilt, but honestly I felt more idiotic than mad. If anything I was upset with myself because I promised myself that I wouldn’t get close to anyone ever again and this was exactly why. Ryder didn’t necessarily owe me an explanation. I should have known that hanging out with me was only because we had to form some kind of bond for this partnership to work. I made the mistake thinking it might be more than that.

I appreciated Skye looking out for me, but it did annoy me a little bit thinking she was making my decisions for me behind my back when she was hanging out with all of them. Sure, Ryder is a touchy subject because of some decisions he’s made, but did she know why he was like that? Did he ever tell her what he had gone through? Not that it’s any excuse, but it does make some kind of sense. I knew I’d have to talk to her about it eventually, but at the end of the day she knew him better than I did. Didn’t she?

“Lennon?”

When I snapped out of my thoughts, the professor was standing in front of me. She’d been asking me a question I quite frankly did not hear. The entire class had been waiting on me, which left me completely embarrassed.

“Sorry, I didn’t hear you.”

“Yeah I could tell, you were somewhere else.”

“What was the question?”

Professor Hugo leaned against her desk and looked at me curiously. She always asked a lot of questions, making her the most observant professor I had.

“Do you think Daisy deserved the love that Gatsby felt for her?”

“Honestly, no.”

“And why is that?”

We had moved on to our new read, The Great Gatsby. I’d read this book a million times, hating Daisy. She was one of the most self absorbed and selfish characters I had ever encountered. Gatsby loved her through and through, but she didn’t care even a little bit.

“Daisy is selfish throughout the entire novel. Gatsby clearly loves her more than anything and she doesn’t care. She is entitled and self absorbed, so caring about other people is the last thing she plans on doing.”

Hugo nodded her head agreeing and walked over to the other side of her desk, picking up a pile of papers. She started giving small piles to the front row in order for them to be passed back and kept looking over at me intriguingly.

“Alright everyone, class is over and I want these assignments done with the rest of the reading in time for class tomorrow.”

I started packing up with everyone else, putting things in my bag.
